Day of Slavic writing and culture (Day of Saints Cyril and Methodius) is the Russian name for the holiday dedicated to the day of memory of the holy Equal-to-the-Apostles brothers Methodius and Cyril (IX century), enlighteners of the Slavs, creators of the Slavic alphabet.
Day of Slavic writing and culture is celebrated annually on May 24 in all Slavic countries. For the first time in Russia, this day was celebrated at the state level in 1863, in connection with the 1000th anniversary of the creation of the Slavic alphabet by Saints Cyril and Methodius, in the same year a decree was passed on the celebration of Memorial Day of Saints Cyril and Methodius on May 11 (May 24, according to the new style). The holiday was revived in 1986, and in 1991 it received the status of a state.
